The next season is upon at Blackstone's where we have "gifts for all reasons, and all seasons."

Spring is in the air!

Decorating our ceiling when you walk in are our famous hand-painted Austrian Easter eggs.

Eager to jump from our new Caspari garden pots are cheery colored wooden rabbits by Suzanne Nicoll. These cute rabbits can go in a nursery or a small child's room - and are a perfect Easter decor too! They are 25" across and about 16" high. Availble colors include: Aqua, green, whitewash and warm pink. The silk tulips are also a great spring time favorite...now you can have a lasting bouquet of spring colors!

We have the complete collection of Neptune 1 Studio's Beauport decoupage plates. The second in their series of Historic New England Home plate collections, the Beauport plates are a perfect addition to any spring table scape.

Looking for ways to express your lifestyle with a new look for spring? Stop in and see one of our new book titles, The way we live with the things we love. Accenting the book is a new way to display the classic Shaker Box. Simply prop the Shaker Box lid up and add a silk hydrangea water pour to the box. Surrounding the Shaker Boxes are small paperweights of sailboats made by Screencraft Tileworks of Rhode Island, another of local New England products. We also carry a growing selection of Screencraft Tilework coasters, clocks, trivets and small stacking tables. The Shaker Boxes pictured here are made by my dad, Richard Krzys of Ohio.

Our Blackstone's Collector's Corner is in full spring bloom. New from Wendt & Kuhn are flower children that can hold placecards or simply grace a table, shelf, or cabinet. The best ideas for Valentine's are often the least expensive, even free...such gifts truly come from the heart

Whether it's Valentine's Day, your anniversary, your birthday, or just because day, the best gifts in life often cost very little...or to use the old classic song title, "The best things (gifts) in life are free". I know it seems strange for me to promote free gifts since I own a gift store, but I can sympathize, even fully understand what many of you are going through right now...I am in retail after all...I see, and live it, firsthand. Many of us find ourselves in a tough spot financially. We want to do something special for those we care most about but often money is a huge obstacle.

Quotes
In my last blog I discussed quotes. Quotes enable you to express what you feel and think in ways you might be challenged to express yourself (okay, I will speak for myself). A simple store bought card with a beautiful quote included inside from you is a very personal (and if appropriate, romantic) gift for Valentine's Day.

Romantic Dinner at Home
Buy a new cookbook (good investment if you like to cook - come check out our cookbooks from local authors) and treat your significant other to a romantic candle light dinner (maybe you need a few candles for the table...okay, we have a great selection of Caspari and Root candles).

For those of you who can't imagine not giving something for Valentine's Day, here are a few inexpensive ideas...

Great Gift ideas for Valentine's Day - Quotes

Everybody loves a good quote, and I am definitely no exception to the rule. I like to use and/or refer to quotes in almost every aspect of my life, from thank you letters to a recent story I was asked to write about my niece Allison, who by the way is 14 and preparing to make her confirmation in church (see her quote below).

When it comes to love quotes, I simply melt, which is what happened to me last August (2009) while my my husband and I were visiting the Ben's Garden booth at the New York International Gift Show. We arrived at his booth and it was covered in decoupage quote plates, but one that has continued to stay in my mind (and which we carry at Blackstone's) is a quote by A.A. Milne, the author of Winnie the Pooh:

“The best part of the day is when you and me become we.”

another great quote of his from Pooh is...
“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”

One last famous quote suitable for a great gift for Valentine's Day from Ben's Garden is...
“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” - Charlie Brown

Not for Navigation - Unique Gifts for Men (and Women) - Part 4

Okay this one we have to share with the women...Not for Navigation's hand-crafted collection of coastal inspired, high quality bags, totes, duffels, and pillows are just way to cool to be just another unique gift for men. They would make a great gift idea for the women too!

Baseball is the all American past time. Those of us who live in Red Sox nation can definitely attest to this statement. The Man Can - Unique Gifts for Men - Part 1

Last year you bought him a sweater. The year before it was a good book. Guys always think its hard to shop for us...but what about them? Especially when you want to find something unique. Something different. Neptune 1 Studio - Sneak Peak at Beauport Series

Our relationship started in the winter through a simple phone call. Hi she said, my name is Phyllis and I am with a business called Neptune 1 Studios. We make a line of decoupage plates that I think might be quite well suited for Blackstone's. The year was off to a very slow start. Mother nature kept throwing us one snow storm after another. Shoppers were not out shopping yet somehow something told us that if we tried this line we would not be sorry...thanks to a great product made by Sue and Phyllis - locally made I might add - we have been anything but sorry.

Neptune 1 Studios first collection from the Lee Mansion came with their leading man, Neptune, part of the Lee Mansion's wallpaper images. Next came Ashley Bowen, whose original paintings from the 1700s that were rescued by a local man who found them in a trashcan! The Ashley Bowen series includes harbor paintings this young ship's rigger painted whenever in port. Sue and Phyllis even included some of his ship logs under several of the images.

What could be next?

A teaming up with one of Historic New England homes, and meet the Beauport Series - Zuber's Decor Chinois Wallpaper from the Sleeper-McCann House.

I hope you are able to visit Blackstone's this holiday season and see all three collections firsthand. These collections are a fabulous snapshot of American history as well as beautiful pieces to display and, best of all, they are food safe!

Christmas is here...Meet Snap from JingleNog

The Christmas season is upon us with it's magic gradually spreading throughout Blackstone's daily. Melodic Christmas melodies fill the air. Displays are being transformed into winter wonderlands of miniature holiday scenes complete with German pewter figurines and holiday mice (Wee Forest Folk figures), and lest we forget, the famous eleven dot angels from Wendt & Kuhn.

The ceiling - once famous many years back for its array of ornaments glinting from end to end - is now transformed for the second year into a winter wonderland of twinkling lights and delights. New to our ornament collection this year are JingleNog's ornaments, which are all hand made with mouth blown European glass. Produced in Italy and Poland, the line is designed by JingleNog's owner and creator Melissa Byrne.

Snap
Quite the dancer, we are not really sure where he got the talent from. Snap is always ready for a good time and a little nog. Rumor has it that Snap once danced with Ginger, Posh and Spice. Oh those Girls!
Who knows what would have happened if he had devoted himself to kicking a soccer ball instead of kicking it up on the red ballroom carpet. We will never know. Or will we?

At long last...my first blog!

Unlike my first website for Blackstone's that I had up and running within weeks, my first blog has taken me nearly six months to bring to life! Whew! I did it, together with a revision to our store website - that now includes online shopping - and many long hours spent working at the shop with my fellow co-owner Mark. Life as an independent shop owner this year has certainly kept me (us) on my toes. Hosting events have been one of our key successes starting with WGBH's Brass Sisters - Marilyn and Sheila Brass for a double booked back to back Saturday book signing and bake-off competition.
